Theatre History

Prior to 1980, theatre at UM-Rolla was informally produced by and for interested students.  In 1980, theatre became an official academic program and has for over 25 years existed as an enhancement program for all university students, who are encourage to participate and attend productions staged by the program.  each semester the program offers one mainstage production and a series of one-act plays.  In addition to performance opportunities, the program also offers students the opportunity to participate on the technical side of theatre production.

Center Stage Club

At present, the university provides little of the existing budget for the theatre program.  In order to provide the funding necessary for the program, the university theatre mostly depends on ticket revenue.  However, a theatre fund-raising board was established dubbed "The Center Stage Club." during the 96-97 academic year.  CSC helps to cover production costs, the purchase of necessary equipment, and student scholarships.  It is the intention of the university theatre program to continue developing patron support for the program.

Accomplishments

The theatre department has come a long way since its official start in 1980s.  Just recently,  the honorary theatre fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega, has renewed and reopened it's chapter on campus.  Continuing on with new organizations, the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) has also opened on campus.  The group is underway to becoming a Recognized Student Organization by StuCo, and has recently become a nationally recognized chapter.

The theatre department is also very excited about starting up a Theatre Minor.  The minor will allow students give students a basic theatre education and will place them in a position to carry on with theatre education at another university if they wish.  The minor should be available by the Fall Semester of 2009!
